Our Creative Story
Artistic Roots
The LuigArt building, built in 1850, was originally Fayette County’s first steam-powered hemp factory. It became the Luigart & Haring Malt Mill in 1873, transforming barley malt production under German immigrant Joseph Luigart. After his death in 1896, the building fell into disrepair.

In August 1937, it reopened as Dixieland Gardens, a nightclub for the African American community, operated by A. C. Harper. Located outside Lexington city limits, it hosted community events and featured a bandstand and dance floor, showcasing prominent jazz musicians until 1944.
